This study investigated the interactions between volatile and char during biomass pyrolysis at 400&nbsp;°C, employing a β-5 lignin dimer and amino-modified graphitized carbon nanotube (CNT-NH2) as their models, respectively. The results demonstrated that both -NH2 and its carrier (CNT) facilitated the conversion of the β-5 dimer, which significantly increased from 9.7% (blank run), to 61.6% (with CNT), and to 96.6% (with CNT-NH2). CNT mainly favored the breakage of C-O bond in the feedstock to produce dimers with a yield of 55.5%, while CNT-NH2 promoted the cleavage of both C-O and C-C bonds to yield monomers with a yield up to 63.4%. Such significant changes in the pyrolysis behaviors of the β-5 lignin dimer after the introduction of CNT-NH2 were considered to be mainly caused by hydrogen-bond formations between -NH2 and the dimeric feedstock/products, in addition to the π-π stacking between CNT and aromatic rings. In this study, crude oils extracted from spent coffee grounds (SCG) and olive pomace (OP) were used as raw-material to synthesize low-calorie triacylglycerols, either by acidolysis with capric acid, or by interesterification with ethyl caprate, in solvent-free media, catalyzed by sn-1,3 regioselective lipases. The Rhizopus oryzae lipase (ROL) was immobilized in magnetite nanoparticles (MNP-ROL) and tested as novel biocatalyst. MNP-ROL performance was compared with that of the commercial immobilized Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase (Lipozyme TL IM). For both oils, Lipozyme TL IM preferred interesterification over acidolysis. MNP-ROL catalyzed reactions were faster and acidolysis was preferred with yields of c.a. 50% new triacylglycerols after 3&nbsp;h acidolysis of OP or SCG oils. MNP-ROL was very stable following the Sadana deactivation model with half-lives of 163&nbsp;h and 220&nbsp;h when reused in batch acidolysis and interesterification of OP oil, respectively. OBJECTIVE Hospitalizations are the most costly component of healthcare in Canada, and hospitalization rates are higher in the multiple sclerosis (MS) population compared to the general population. This study aimed to examine predictors of hospitalizations in the MS population in Saskatchewan, Canada. METHODS This retrospective cohort study used population-based health administrative data from Saskatchewan, Canada from 1996 to 2016. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/i-191.html Subjects with MS were identified using a validated definition (?3 hospital, physician, or drug claims for MS). Up to five general population controls were identified for each MS case and matched on sex, age, and geographical location. The rate of hospitalizations and reason for admission were determined for each case and control. Negative binomial (hospitalization rate) and binary logistic (reason for admission) regression models fitted with generalized estimating equations were used to test the following potential predictors sex, age, median household income, calendar year, prior ation with comorbidity. Our results highlight that reasons for hospitalizations can differ by age, and clinicians should consider this when managing patients, as they make efforts to reduce hospitalizations in the MS population. OBJECTIVES Fetal exposure to phthalates and bisphenols may lead to vascular developmental adaptations, which program later cardiovascular disease. We examined the associations of fetal exposure to phthalates and bisphenols with childhood blood pressure. METHODS In a population-based, prospective cohort study among 1,064 mother-child pairs, we measured maternal urine phthalate and bisphenol concentrations in first, second and third trimester of pregnancy. We measured childhood blood pressure at the mean age of 9.7&nbsp;years (standard deviation 0.2&nbsp;years) old. Analyses were performed for the total group, and for boys and girls separately. RESULTS Maternal urine phthalate concentrations were not associated with childhood blood pressure among boys. Higher third trimester maternal urine concentrations of high molecular weight phthalates (HMWP), di-2-ehtylhexylphthalate (DEHP) and di-n-octylphthalate (DNOP) were associated with lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure among girls (p-values&nbsp; less then &nbsp;0.01). Also, higher second trimester maternal urine total bisphenol and bisphenol A concentrations were associated with higher systolic blood pressure among boys (p values&nbsp; less then &nbsp;0.01), but tended to be associated with a lower diastolic blood pressure among girls. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest sex-dependent associations of maternal urine phthalate and bisphenol concentrations during pregnancy with childhood blood pressure. Further studies are needed to explore the underlying mechanisms and long term consequences. Arsenic (As) is a potential contaminant in sewage sludge that may affect waste treatment and limit the use of these waste materials as soil amendments. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important and effective process for the treatment of sewage sludge and the chemical speciation of As is particularly important in sludge AD. However, the biotransformation genes of As in sludge during AD has not been fully explored. In this study, the influent and effluent sludge of anaerobic digester in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was collected to investigate the species transformations of As, the abundance and diversity of As biotransformation genes was explored by real-time PCR (qPCR) and metagenomic sequencing, separately. The results showed that arsenite [As(III)] and arsenate [As(V)] were predominant in the influent sludge, whereas the relative abundance of monomethylarsenic acid (MMA) increased by 25.7% after digestion. As biotransformation genes were highly abundant, and the As(III) S-adenosylmethionine methyltransferase (arsM) gene was the predominant which significantly increased after AD by qPCR analysis. Metagenomic analysis indicated that the diversity of the arsM-like sequences also increased significantly after AD. Most of the arsM-like sequences in all the influent and effluent sludge samples were related to Bacteroidetes and Alphaproteobacteria. Furthermore, co-occurrence network analysis indicated a strong correlation between the microbial communities and As. This study provides a direct and reliable reference on As biotransformation genes and microbial community in the AD of sludge.
